October 6, 2019
Dr. Jean Beasley was a female African-American pediatrician, one of the first in the country. She practiced with her husband, Dr. Albert Beasley, in Westport. Her career was cut short when she died at a young age. Dr. Beasley died in 2020, and he left a generous donation to permanently endow the award, and it was renamed in both their honor. Grants from the award are used to foster the education of students from minority group to attend four-year post-secondary education institutions following graduation from Staples High School, especially those who have shown academic promise, are interested in medicine as a career, or nursing or other allied fields.
